CT (computer tomography) scanning is a non-destructive process that can provide detailed visual information on the inner state of a work of art, i.e. manufacturing techniques, natural damage such as oxidation, erosion or cracking, and areas of repair and restoration.

Although it is in itself not a dating test, scanning does not affect levels of TL or 14C in a piece and can be safely used in conjunction with other such techniques of observation and analysis to provide more complete information in the process of authentication.

One benefit of CT is that it examines the entire object three-dimensionally rather than deriving results from testing just a small sample.
